Irish Flies
2020/11/25
Ireland. Home of great nature with beautiful coast is one of the highest reputable fly fishing destination of all time. Centuries of frequent round trips between great waters and great villages and towns nirtured fine selection of flies that are handsomely crafted yet loosing no functionality to catch brown trout, sea trout, and salmon.
Enrico Fantasia of Dublin, owner of Grapecircus wine imports, dropped me a note while ago introducing assorted Irish flies which went straight inside my display box on the wall then I forgot to properly introduce them to the club. Mr. Fantasia was visiting Toky for business last year. Shame I couldn't organize a drink with this club who love good wines (when we can afford one, of course).
With much respect, I'd like to introduce Irish flies with text prepared by Mr. Fantasia to deliver genuine impression:
(my camera is little out of order, I'll update with new photo)
1. Connemara Black
A great sea trout fly for the west o Ireland, and a very good brown trout fly for the small hill lakes or when buzzers are hatching.
2. Delphi Silver
An excellent sea trout fly, named after the famous Delhi Lodge - a sea trout & salmon fishiery in Connemara.
3. Rogans Extractor
Created last century by Rogan's of Ballyshannon, one of the best fly tyers of Irealand. Very good at mayfly time or as general attractor pattern.
4. Sooty Olive
The quintessential Irish fly. In different sizes and shades can be used all season.
5. Green Peter
Created to imitate the Green Peter (a big green sedge common in the limestone lakes of the West), is now used all season to catch brown trout, sea trout, and even salmon. Can be fished wet or dry: fish just can't resist.
6. Claret Bumble
A creation of Kingswill Moore, is one of the most useful top droppers. It represent nothing, but it catches lot of fish.
