Sea Perch Day Game – Yokohama Bay, Kanagawa

2020/11/25

Mike, the latest member of the club, was looking for his first opportunity to try out saltwater fly fishing. His gun is 10wt bit selective for its match, so we booked Pallas FGS for Japanese sea perch game.

In other occasion, I would take Mike to night game first which is relatively easier comparing to day game when fish can't sense your boat and are less likely to be spooked. But I respected Mike's 4th season in fly fishing with 10wt tackle to debut to saltwater needs strong fish of match. Gotta be day game when fish fight hard.

Despite the tough condition in which water temperature dropped in few days after big typhoon and kept most of fish in deeper water column, Captain managed to deliver us to strike zone.

Mike picked up the game quickly and his solid cast put the fly tightly parallel to structure to lure perches into bites. Despite the unfamiliarity of the specimen and to the wind, Mike managed to pull out half dozen strikes, and 2 are actually inside fish's mouth. Then what happened was what every first time saltwater player does. Mike who started from trout fishing, kept making Trout Set.

Perches' feeding style is to open its mouth wide and suck the bait along with surrounding water. It does not turn after it takes the bait like trout does, so hook needs to be pulled several times to be set.

It was also hard day for me who spent seasons for this game. I had to cast incredibly tight to lure the fish I used to take for ease. It seemed that fish are not motivated to come out more than a foot. I only managed to catch one small one on floating minnow.

Then Captain took me to calm area where we could see perches hiding right underneath cruiser. I always wanted to try one thing on them, so I watched carefully and took my sinking tackle with surf candy on.

Finally an agreeable catch by sight. As soon as my surf candy sank to the same depth, this perch chased  it slowly moving away and took it without hesitation. Rare occasion to make us able to fish sea perches on sight fishing.

Unfortunately, Mike couldn't hook fish on this trip. He has wonderful skill to make this game. He will get the strip set by next time, and I have no doubt he will catch good size fish.

The most important thing we caught wasn't fish at all that day, but moment to forget about our work and feel free in open wide space.Mike, the latest member of the club, was looking for his first opportunity to try out saltwater fly fishing.
