Luggage Regulations – Flight
Japan is formed by sum of archipelagos and fishing over his regions means you will have to clear the regulation on your fishing luggage. Fly rod comes in 4 pieces are usually OK for you can pack it in large suitcase or backpack, but if you are aiming to transport with 2 pieces or less rod, you should be cautious about extra charge.
Domestic flight are usually very easy, but international flight can charge around $150 per excessive size rod case, so please be mindful before you travel to your destinations.
1-A. Check In Luggage - Domestic Flights
Luggage fitting to following criterion is free of charge:
- Weight up to 20kg economy class - JAL takes up to 45kg ANA to 40kg if flying premium
- Sum of 3 sides up to 203cm (ANA), 50 x 60 x 120cm (JAL)
- Sporting items (suftboards, skis, fishing rods) can be checked in beyond the length, but need to fit within weight limit
Otherwise, there will be extra charge per kg.
You can't check in any inflammable or explosive objects such as following:
- Lighter
- Gas cartridge or fuel for camping/lighting gear
- Substitue lithium ion battery for electronics
- Excessively large lithium ion battery beyond 2kg
1-B. Carry In Luggage - Domestic Flights
Other than personal items (camera, poach, or hand bag), you can carry in 1 luggage fitting the following criterion:
- Weight up to 10kg
- Sum of 3 sides within 115cm for flights with more than 100 seats, 100cm for flights with less than 100 seats.
You can't carry in following objects:
- Excessively large lithium ion battery beyond 2kg
- Gas cartridge or fuel for camping/lighting gear
2-A. Check In Luggage - International Flights
Luggage fitting to following criterion is free of charge:
- Economy: 2 x luggage each weight up to 23kg (JAL), 1 x luggage weight up to 23kg (ANA)
- Premium: 3x luggage each weight up to 32kg (JAL), 2 x luggage each weight up to 32kg (ANA) if flying business class, 3 x luggage each weight up to 32kg (ANA) if flying first class
- Sum of 3 sides up to 203cm (JAL), 158cm (ANA)
- Sporting goods can be sum of 3 sides up to 203cm (ANA)
Otherwise, there will be extra charge per kg.

- Substitue lithium ion battery for electronics
- Excessively large lithium ion battery beyond 2kg
