Easy Tenkara or Easy Fly? – Skagit Design Easy Fly Kit
Pretend you are taken back to the childhood or to the medieval time. What do you need to make the easiest or simplest way to do fly fishing?
All you need is a fly, fishing line, casting line, and a hand rod.
Skagit Designs' "Easy Fly Set"comes with a 8' fly rod that has no stripping guides or reel seat, a 7 ' long braided monofilament casting line or furled leader as in Tenkara, and 2 easy flies: egg and marabou bugger.
The length of rod is long enough to form loop to cast the rig to the target, and it is short enough for ease of handling, so that 4 year old can fight with ease against 40cm raibow trout.
About the Stick
I'm a person who gives so much damn about the aesthetics of tools. If I'm paying my good money, it's gotta look beautiful. The one I got was 2pc Easy Fly stick with bamboo-colour blank and cork grip, so that my son can become familiar with what he is going to play with later.
Easy Fly stick came in version 1 (discontinued) bamboo-colour with cork grip in 2pc and now comes in version 2 all in telescopic.
1. Bamboo blank + cork grip
2. Olive blank + EVA grip
3. Rapsberry Pink blank + EVA grip
4. Fish On! Shishidome Original: Yellow blank + cork grip
5. Shinjuku Sansui Original: Tri-colour (blue, white, and red) or Rusta (red, yellow, and green) + EVA grip
Not quite long enough to do intense Tenkara, but it is long enough to cast at fish 20 feet away. In which distance, you don't need a full length of fly line to be store on fly reel.
Fly rod blank gives the action similar to that of 2wt rod or less. Since there is no fly line involved, maybe I should call this 0wt? When I tested with few feet of 3wt DT line and it formed a nice loop. This rod can probably cast fly line normally.
Fighting strength of the rod is really well, and it nicely gave answer to my last attempt to turn my broken Echo Micro Practice Rod into the same thing. I never field tested the converted Micro Practice Rod for I didn't believe in its butt power. Now, I don't have to.
Where to Buy One
They are dead stock now. I would try Fish On! fishery, Sansui, and Joshuya for the stock. Otherwise, search on Tackleberry Online.
Playing with this Toy
I came across many ideas to play with this fun toy. You can play with variety of casting lines from tenkara taper line to trimmed floating fly line to fish just about anything within the short range.
1. Fishpond
2. Mountain Creek
3. Pond in City Parks
4. Dock in Lake
5. Dock in Ocean
It's just a matter of which one I'm gonna try first.
