Summer Day in Stream – Uratanzawa, Kanagawa
I was too exhausted from sleepless weeks and event from previous day, so Shun took over the wheel and kindly delivered party of 4 to the venue.
Mr. and Mrs. Harima were already there started fishing.
Young Jedi Ally
One of the missions was to lead Ally, novice fly fisher, into the first step of sport. The problem of fly fishing is that it’s a mix of athletics and engineering and they are both needed to be learnt together to make things work. Starting point is to form a loop by moving rods tip in parallel and let it fly in the end, so Ally and I went into practice for 30 minutes with going over fundamental and basic lesson then…?
How Was Fishing?
As sun moved higher, fishing became more of real stream fishing than that of stock fishery. Fish stayed deep in the bottom, observe surface cautiously, then speed up to what’s on surface. That’s when natural drift is required, but giving that to novice anglers gave bit of challenge for I had to extend their leaders about extra 6 feet.
It turned challenge to experienced anglers the same, for trout weren’t taking fly with sure move. Hooking ratio was 1/5 or 1/8 and we had to use half sinking patterns tied on scud or umbrella hooks.
Overall, it was great day for experienced, intermediate, and novice fly fishers the same. It’s fun to fish together in same pool.
