Island Game Part 3: Some Flat, Okinawa

2020/11/25

As my wife and kids were heading to museum who wouldn’t mind letting me use her digital camera for 4 hours, I asked to be dropped off to secret reef recommended by Harima-san. It was very windy and chilly day, so I almost gave up on fishing out here, but I did not want to miss the introduction, so I pushed on.

From the entry point, it looked nothing specifically unique from other shallow reef, but as water receded, it revealed huge flat underneath. One of the largest inner reef you could wade on this island.

Brassy trevally (Caranx papuensis) caught on #6 UV shrimp before water fully receded. No sign of his big brother, but he was worth the catch for enough fiestiness.

Wind turned very strong and it was disturbing the surface of water which made it difficult taking photograph as well. It was quite wavy, but I walked towards other angler who was fishing with float rig on the edge of reef. We worked the edge for half an hour, but found nothing actively feeding at the edge of reef.

As I slowly walked back along the edge of coral table fishing at the crack, I caught series of dory snappers (Lutjanus fulviflamma) on orange turd fly.

So this was the last day in 2009 and the last day fishing in this trip to Okinawa. I see huge potential of shallow reef fishing even in Winter. However, I regret I should have tried to fish location facing south east where water was warmer, or book guide boat earlier who could deliver me to bigger fish.

Nevertheless, it was absolutely fun to fish in “Ino" or inner reef along the island of Okinawa already, and I should return next summer to enjoy this further. As my wife and kids were heading to museum who wouldn’t mind letting me use her digital camera for 4 hours, I asked to be dropped off to secret reef recommended by Harima-san.
