Blue Gill / Giru
Bluegill (panfish)
Lepomis macrochirus (Rafinesque, 1819)
First batch of this specimen were imported from North America to experiment whether they would make food fish by the Emperor (arch prince back then) to Lake Ippekiko in the 1960’s. It is said that bluegill spread nationwide by private stockings by anglers. However, its habitat coincides with popular game fish: Herabuna/Japanese Crucian Carp, so it is also said that rapid migration was caused by accidental mix in stocking.
Today, you can find bluegills in many temperate water in Japan
