Stream of Native Cycle – Kosuge River C&R, Yamanashi

2020/11/25

I drove to the North West Tokyo to meet the trouts in C&R area of Kosuge River for the whole day game. After 1 hour on Chuo Highway, another hour through towns of Akishima, Fussa, Hamura, and Aume, great sight of Lake Okutama or Ogochi Reservoir opened in front of car.  I could fish in this lake for bass and trout, but I continued on to the backwater of reservoir for stream game.

I arrived at the river around 6am, purchased ticket from the river keeper nicely came by, then headed straight to water. Last and the first time I was here 2 years ago, the river was flooding due to large typhoon. Now the river is back at normal state: bubbling freestone stream inside green carpet.

I caught 9 rainbow trouts 18-26cm, and many of them still showed par mark with fins in perfect condition indicating these are bred in wild. They swim too well that they dominated all the spots where yamame usually takes. In fact, I spotted yamame only twice . Maybe due to the fishing pressure caused by other anglers went ahead.

Then I caught a beeeautiful native white-spotted char in the shallow near small inlet which brings colder water. Size is 23cm... which means that I renewed my personal record of wild white-spotted char (this nikko iwana against 18cm yamato iwana I caught in Kiso River)! Very skinny iwana whose diet must be disturbed by constant pressure from anglers including me...

C&R runs about 2km from the backwater of Ogouchi Reservoir, but I saw most of fish concentrated in the downstream. There were many drifters in the downstream, but very few in the upstream, so this maybe the reason. All the fish I caught this day were positioning themselves very tight in feeding lanes showing the toughness of survival.

I wonder how many fish go downstream to the Reservoir then come back up. I should keep my eyes on this stream for sometime. Any good sign, I shall return.

Data

Air Tempreture: 23°C
Water Tempreture: 18°C
